Lake Barambah and Lake Boondooma are two great tourist attractions and features to South Burnett. It is here at Lake Barambah where you will find the Bjelke-Petersen Dam. Although the dam is primarily used for irrigation and water supply to surrounding towns it is also extremely popular for freshwater fishing, boating, camping and picnicking.
While in the area, be sure to visit the Bunya Mountains, which are shared between Nanango, Kingaroy and Wambo Shires. Covering about 25,000 acres you are bound to relax and unwind while exploring the natural beauty and its inhabitants. The Bunya Mountains are ideal for bushwalkers and naturalists alike. There are many walking tracks throughout the Mountain Range, but please note that many are quite steep. For those of you who are more at one with nature and enjoy a bit of adventure, numerous campsites are available in and around the area.
Kingaroy is often refered to as the Peanut Capital of Australia. You can take a tour of the peanut factories to discover what is involved in the growing, harvesting, distribution and selling of various kinds of peanuts. The Kingaroy PCA Peanut Festival takes place every year during the month of August. This is an annual celebration of rural Queensland and its people. They have peanut competitions, games, workshops, races and most of all a fun day out for all. You don't have to be nuts about peanuts for this one!
